Description

Het voormalig hoofdgebouw en Het Groote Museum werd in twee fasen gebouwd naar ontwerp van J. van Maurik. De meer dan levensgrote leeuw en tijger van Artis-kunstenaar J. Kaas die de entree flankeren, vervangen het oorspronkelijke roofdierenpaar van J.J. Verdonck. Op de begane grond waren de Genootschapzalen en het café-restaurant, thans Koningszaal en Tijgerzaal gevestigd, de verdieping was bestemd voor het Groote of Zoölogisch Museum. De oorspronkelijke inrichting is opmerkelijk goed bewaard gebleven. In de hoge museumzalen met vitrinekasten op de galerijen, stonden opgezette dieren, schelpencollecties, dierskeletten en preparaten tentoongesteld. Het pand wordt momenteel gerestaureerd en getransformeerd tot het negentiende-eeuwse Museum van de Biodiversiteit.
