Description

This unique golden ring was unfortunately stolen and the ring in the picture is only a copy. The original ring was found in an outdoor toilet during excavations in Kjøpmannsgata by the public library in 1973 or 1974. Shortly after its discovery, it was stolen and no one has seen it since.

The theft happened at a temporary exhibition near the site in 1974. The snake-ring was presented together with other interesting objects in which the archeologists collected from the city ground. The crime has passed its statute of limitations, but the museum are still searching for it and still hopes that it will be returned.

The archeologists has, otherwise, no theory concerning to who it has belonged, but it is unlikely that it was a woman of the people. According to Terje Brattli, scientist at the museum, only wealthy persons could afford jewellery made of gold. He assumes that the ring got lost by the owner during a visit to the toilet.
