| Description |
English: River Alt, Croxteth Park This narrow waterway at the rear of Croxteth Hall is actually the River Alt. The name Croxteth is Viking in origin, meaning either 'Croc's landing place' or 'river-bend landing place'. It had become Croxstath by 1228. Vikings sailed up the River Alt and established a settlement here in the 9th century. Looking at the river now, it is difficult to imagine a Viking ship sailing up this narrow channel but up to a few hundred years ago, prior to construction of flood gates near the estuary and river management, it was a much more substantial waterway. Remains of a Viking ship were found during the construction of the M62 roundabout at Tarbock. |
