In the 1880s, Sisley lived in reduced financial circumstances in the small town of Moret-sur-Loing, southeast of Paris, near Fontainebleau, where he concentrated on painting landscapes, unlike other Impressionist masters, who painted figures, portraits, and still lifes, as well. Sisley carried on the classic Impressionist style, with broken brushstrokes and a palette of high-keyed colors, as seen in this view of an unidentified riverside.

Exploring color and light, he also included wispy white clouds, as in some of his other paintings, to introduce movement and animation into the scene.
