Summary edit

Description
English: River Wall (River Thames) at Crossness The tidal flood defence structures at Crossness Sewage Treatment works (ie the Riverwall) generally consist of a lower wall retaining an earth embankment and an upper flood wall set back from the lower wall. The lower wall appears to have been constructed in three phases.

The western most length of riverwall fronting the original sewage treatment works is constructed of brickwork and appears to be of the same period as the original works (1860s).The central length of lower riverwall (pictured)is newer and probably constructed circa 1960, at the same time as the new sewage treatment works.

The Crossness Pumping Station was built by Sir Joseph Bazalgette as part of Victorian London's urgently needed main sewerage system. It was officially opened by the Prince of Wales in April 1865. The Beam Engine House is a Grade 1 Listed Industrial Building. (http://www.crossness.org.uk/)
