Summary edit

Description This stone house on Person Street is quite unique in Downtown Raleigh, as most homes in the area are brick or wood frame. The house was originally constructed in 1872 for Robert F. Hoke, a Civil War General from the state. Originally a modest structure with one and a half floors, the building was originally clad in wooden clapboards, which were removed and replaced with the uniquely local Falls Leucogneiss stone in a late 1930s renovation, which also expanded the second floor to full height. Also at this time, the porches that originally surrounded the house on three sides were removed, with an intention to replace them, which was never done, leaving doors intended for the second floor of the unbuilt porch leading to nothing. Small Gothic-style windows were added to the second floor of the structure to give it a defined and stately appearance, though the original front door and first-floor windows were retained. The building then became home to the "Stonewall Tourist Home" for some time, though it eventually reverted back to single-family residential occupancy. Today, this home graces the street corner and gives Raleigh a little bit of Texas-style character that is uncommon in the rest of the surrounding area.
