Description |
English: In the early years of the 20th century, Robert Patton was one of downtown Seattle's more colorful characters. He moved to Seattle around 1900 and lived in a houseboat on Lake Union. Patton's folk weather forecasts were so accurate that people called him the "human barometer." A Seattle Times artist used Patton as the model for his Umbrella Man character in a series of daily weather forecast cartoons.
In this photo, Robert Patton, Seattle's Umbrella Man, stands on a Seattle street wearing his umbrella headgear. The photo was probably taken sometime between 1909 and 1911.
