English: Rochdale Canal above Lock No 92 in central Manchester Boaters wishing to complete the Cheshire Ring have to pass nine locks (Nos. 92 to 83 inclusive) of the Rochdale Canal, in order to travel from the Bridgewater to the Ashton Canal. These nine locks were the first of the Rochdale Canal locks to re-open and they gave considerable trouble. Among the largest locks on the inland waterway system, they were very heavy to work and were not well maintained. Added to which there were further hazards, as exemplified by the derelict barge seen here partly blocking the waterway. Lock No 91 is just visible in the distance. (It should be explained that the locks are numbered from 1 at the Sowerby Bridge, or Yorkshire, end to 92 at the Manchester, or Lancashire, end). This is a 1981 view, and I understand things are much better these days.
This part of the towpath was used in a chase scene (with dog Toby) in the Sherlock Holmes tv movie "The Sign of Four" (1987) starring Jeremy Brett. |
