Tensile cracks growing from edges of a shear fracture in rock in 2D

Summary

edit
Description
English: Shear fracture (blue) under shear loading (black arrows) in rock. Tensile cracks (red) grow at an angle from the edges of the shear fracture allowing the shear fracture to propagate by the coalescing of these tensile fractures. While this cartoon only shows 2D propagation, tensile cracks exist on all edges of the shear fracture.
