| Description |
English: Militarily, the "Combate da Roliça", fought on August 17, 1808, was not significant, but, coming just a few weeks after the resounding Battle of Bailén, July 19, 1808, in Andalusia, Spain, it raised immense hopes for freedom in a Portugal left defenceless since November 1807 because of the forced incorporation of most of its Army into the napoléonic troops (as a 'Portuguese Legion', sent to Central Europe and later as far away as Russia), a Portugal which had already endured several months of occupation and confiscations and destruction and shameless looting perpetrated by the French army all along the chain of command. |
