Roliça – Monument to Colonel George Lake

Summary edit

Description
English: The Monument to Colonel George Lake (1781-1808) marks either where he fell or where he was buried by his men after the battle.

On the one side, the inscription reads :
"To the memory of the Ho. Lieut. Col. C. A. F. Lake of the 29th Reg. who fell at the heart of his corps in driving the enemy from the heights of Columbeira on 17th Aug. 1808. This monument was erected by his brother officers as testimony of high regard and esteem."

On the other side (shown) :
"Restored by the officers of the 29th First Batt. Worcestershire Reg. in 1903"

About the 1903 restoration : On the occasion of King Edward VII visiting Lisbon from Friday April 3, 1903 onwards, Victoriano José César (1860-1939), military historian (http://www.arqnet.pt/portal/biografias/cesar_vitorianoj.html), deploring that the memorial was "in complete abandonment and about to disappear", informed Cristóvão Aires de Magalhães Sepúlveda (1853-1930) (http://www.arqnet.pt/dicionario/magalhaessepulveda.html) thereof, who, in turn, met Alfred F. Custance, descendent of a soldier having fought at Roliça – and, from thread to needle, the monument was restored by August 1903. The news was published by "Diario de Noticias" on October 16, 1903, with two sketches : before and after repair. (See also : http://www.portugalweb.net/historia/viriatus/Rolica_04.asp.htm)
