Italy, the Rhineland (Germany), Asia Minor (Turkey) Clay, 1st - 3rd Century AD Those who could not afford the more expensive exemplars made out of bronze, bought lamps made of clay. Roman oil lamps feature a vast diversity of shapes and pictoral decoration: In addition to depiction of gods, from the theatrical world and the arena, erotic motifs were particularly popular. However, to make deductions from image to respective use would be missing the point. The figure-shaped, satyresque lamps with grotesquely over-dimentioned phalli have been connected to the work-shop of Knidos. As far as the various positions of making love on the round fields are concerned, it has to remain open if they really reflect literary treatises on the subjects. |
