DescriptionRoman Reliefs Decorated Ceramics and Modern Imitations, Altes Museum Berlin (5399172335).jpg |
Pergamon (Turkey); 1960 - 62 from art market Clay, 1st century AD and 20th century The Greeks already knew relief decorated ceramics in archaic times. During the time of Hellenism and the Roman Imperial Age, certain classes of ceramics were very popular, which were produced by way of stamps or negative moulds, such as terra sigillata. Amongs others, erotic motifs occur - and they seem to be especially proned to being faked, as thermo-luminescence analyses of the Berlin stamp and the mould have shown, which allegedly came from the workshop of Arezzo. However, the form of the vessel's bottom from Pergamon and the flat jug (lagynos) are authentic. Lagynoi are predominatly connected with the cult of Dionysus. |
