Description
English: Romanic grave goods from the Basilica San Tommaso
  • Cimitile, Province of Naples, Region Campania, Italy

Beyond the two apostlic shrines in Rome (the basilicas of Peter and Paul), the grave of Saint Felix (died at the end of the 3rd century) located in the center of the church complex of today's Cimitile was the most significant pilgrimage center of the Italic peninsula in late antiquity.

The single-nave basilica located on the grounds of the pilgrimage shrine was erected as a burial church. In the nave, 84 walled graves with an east-west orientation that were arranged in two layers, one on top of the other, have been opened up. The slightly elevated apse also had four additional graves with an east-west orientation and one grave with a north-south orientation. The artifacts found here are characteristic of burials of the native-Romanic population during the period of Lombard rule in Italy.

Deutsch: Romanische Grabbeigaben aus der Basilika San Tommaso
  • Cimitile, Provinz Napoli, Region Campania, Italien
