Summary

edit
Description
English: Jacques Delors, former President of the EC. From 22 to 24 January 1996, a round table on the single currency was organised in Brussels. As part of the follow-up to the conclusions of the Madrid European Council, which agreed on the scenario for the changeover to the single currency and decided to call it the "euro", this round table was designed to prepare the ground for framing an information and communication strategy for the introduction of the euro so as to ensure as broad as possible public support for the process. It was co-organized by the European Commission and the European Parliament. The proceedings were attended by over 400 participants from all Member States and all walks of life. Discussions were structured around three workshops which focused on the role to be played in the process by consumers, banks, providers of financial services and businesses, and by public administrations. On 22 January, the opening of the Euro Exhibition took place as well as the opening session conference, at the European Parliament, in the presence of Yves-Thibault de Silguy, Member of the EC in charge of Economic and Financial Affairs, Monetary Matters (in agreement with the President), Credit and Investments and the Statistical Office.
