Summary
editDescriptionRoundelSculpture BarnstapleLongBridge.xcf |
English: Stone-sculpted symbol/logo of the "Barnstaple Bridge Trust" (created 1961) in imitation of a mediaeval (15th century or earlier) relief-sculpture. Built into the parapet of the upstream town side of the bridge. Within a barbed quatrefoil, itself within a roundel. At the north (town) end of the bridge is depicted the Chapel of St Thomas Becket (Lamplugh, Lois, Barnstaple: Town on the Taw, South Molton, 2002, p.13); at the south (Tawstock) end a cross from the top of which flies a long pennant displaying the Cross of St George. Above the centre of the bridge is the heraldic image of an eagle displayed. See: John B. Cruse, The Long Bridge of Barnstaple & The Long Bridge Trust, 1982; & see the "Barnstaple Bridge Trust" web-site[1]. Other similar objects exist on top of the Bridge Trust Chambers Building. |
