Summary edit
DescriptionRoyal Blind Asylum office, Gillespie Crescent - geograph.org.uk - 1308612.jpg |
English: Royal Blind Asylum office, Gillespie Crescent. Originally the site of a 14th-century tower house, a later baronial mansion that stood here was demolished after much protestation in 1800 to make way for James Gillespie's Hospital for Aged Men and Women. This incorporated a separate free school for boys. This was in turn rebuilt in 1870 as a school for boys and girls. The school was rehoused in 1914 in a building on nearby Bruntsfield Links, leaving only a wing which became a workshop for the Royal Blind Asylum in 1975 and is still used as an administrative office. 1626447 |
