Description

This photograph depicts Royal Indian Navy officers of the sloop HMIS HINDUSTAN probably during their 1934 visit to Australia. This photograph was taken at wharf 3, East Circular Quay in Sydney after the ship arrived on 29 November. The vessel departed Sydney for Brisbane at 10:38am on 7 December. HINDUSTAN was stationed in Australian waters to act as an escort for ships attending the Victorian centenary celebrations in October 1934.

This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.
