Français : Rue Saint-Jean, entre 1906 et 1910, négatif sur verre « Au début du XXe siècle, la maison au coin de la rue Saint-Jean et de la côte du Palais abrite la Compagnie pharmaceutique de la Croix Rouge ltée, présidée par le pharmacien-chimiste J. Edmond Dubé. L’entreprise « dépositaire de spécialités françaises » occupe depuis 1896 les locaux du chimiste et droguiste Paul Mathie, qui y tenait une pharmacie depuis 1878. Un nouvel édifice de style Beaux-Arts accueillera une succursale de la Banque de Montréal en 1915. Sur le coin opposé, on peut acheter cigares et journaux au General Wolfe’s Cigar, même si la statue du général qui ornait la façade est conservée dans les locaux de la Literary and Historical Society of Quebec depuis 1898. L’édifice du photographe Jules-Ernest Livernois ferme la perspective de la rue Saint-Jean. La compagnie Detroit Photographic et sa filiale, la Detroit Publishing Company, produiront entre 1898 et 1932 environ 16 000 cartes photographiques à tirage élevé en Amérique du Nord, dont une infime portion présente des paysages québécois. » – Marc Beaudoin, Société historique de Québec |
