Dr. Rufus H. Smith (1851-?) was born in Union, West Virginia. He studied Medicine and began practicing in Craig, Missouri, after graduating from medical school in 1877. He moved to Seattle in 1889. He opened a practice there, and also worked as the chief surgeon for the Great Northern Railroad Company and the Puget Sound Railroad Company until 1893, when he retired from the practice of medicine to pursue other business interests. He invested in real estate, timber lands, and other property. He was married to Frances B. Bilby with whom he had one child.
