DescriptionRuins of a house - geograph.org.uk - 1043828.jpg |
English: Ruins of a house. The 1:25000 map shows a large cattle enclosure here, which is roughly rectangular, but with rounded corners. Nestling within its south-eastern corner, a much smaller rectangle represents the ruins of a house. Nearby, there is a distinctive clump of trees – originally four, but one was brought down by a storm in the 1980s. The remaining trees have many memorial plaques attached to them, bearing the names of local people.
The house is named as "Carman" on old maps. It can be seen in the background of a photo (taken c.1920) which is reproduced on page 70 of the book "Renton Between the Wars" (Jim Murphy, 2007). A similar picture is reproduced on page 64 of the book "The Auld Renton – Vol. 1" (1995) by C. Dennett; the caption includes the following: "The cottage next to the trees used to be tenanted by a Mr. Wullie Johnston who was a slater and plasterer, and is reputed to have carried cwt sacks of cement on his shoulder up the hill to his house". As for the earlier cattle enclosure that surrounds the house, see the end-note of this item for a link to the relevant details. At one time, drove roads led here from all four points of the compass; remains of the roads leading here from the east (914922) and from the west (1051438) are still visible, but only faint traces of the road leading here from the north can be discerned: 1228873. The entire course of the enclosure's walls can still be followed, aside from the south-eastern corner, on which the house was built. For the first in a series of four photos showing the walls of the enclosure, see 1101793. |
