Description
English: Built in 1803-1805, this Federal-style building was the first structure constructed on the South Carolina College Campus, now the University of South Carolina Campus, and was originally known as the South Building. The building was built by Richard Clarke, likely using slave labor, and like other campus buildings built in the first half of the 19th Century, had an enslaved workforce that maintained the building. The building was converted to student housing in 1817, and caught fire in 1832 and 1855, with the 1855 fire gutting the building, leading to its reconstruction under the direction of Ferdinand Connover, using slave labor. The building served as a hospital for wounded Confederate soldiers during the Civil War, and in 1865-1866, temporarily housed the South Carolina House of Representatives in the building’s first-floor chapel. The three-story building features a symmetrical front facade with a taller and wider central wing featuring a front-gable roof flanked by two lower, longer wings with side-gable roofs, six-over-six double-hung windows, a front portico with doric columns and doric pilasters, a rooftop cupola, and simple decorative window hoods. The building is a contributing structure in the Old Campus District, University of South Carolina Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
