| Description |
English: Ryde St John's Road railway workshops Viewed here from St John's Road, this is the workshop which carries out all repairs and maintenance on the Island Line electric stock. It is believed that the earliest railway building here was constructed by the Isle of Wight Railway in 1864. Until 1966, the works was responsible for overhauling the Island steam locomotives, as well as the vintage carriages and had a reputation for work of the highest standard. From 1966, it has been responsible for maintaining the ex-London Transport tube stock used on the Island. As the Island railway has invariably employed "hand me down" locomotives and rolling stock (a situation that still prevails!) the engineers at the works were (and are) expert in maintaining vintage stock that would be considered only fit for scrapping or the museum on the mainland.
