English: On February 12, 2021, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the São Francisco River and the Sobradinho Reservoir.

The São Francisco River rises in the Canastra Mountains and courses through Brazil for 1,811 miles (2,914 km), making it the longest river that stays entirely within Brazil. It flows generally northward before turning eastward to eventually flow into the Atlantic Ocean.

A large dam was built on the river in Sobradinho, an administrative district within the state of Bahia. Located roughly 465 miles (748 km) from its source and 1,188 miles (1,912 km) from the estuary on the Atlantic Coast, the hydroelectric dam first generated power in late 1979 and was completed in 1982. In 2019, the hydroelectric plant added the capability to produce solar energy with the addition of a megawatt-scale floating photovoltaic plant. The first floating solar facility was made up of 3,792 panels and was expected to produce 1.7 MWh per year. Additional capability was added in 2020.
