Em 1949, para abrigar a sua imensa coleção de plantas, Roberto Burle Marx adquiriu o Sítio Santo Antônio da Bica, em Barra de Guaratiba, junto com seu irmão Siegfried Marx. No local havia uma antiga casa de fazenda e uma pequena capela (século XVII) dedicada a Santo Antônio. Burle Marx restaurou ambos os prédios e levou para este local sua coleção de plantas, iniciada aos 6 anos de idade. Em 1973 mudou-se definitivamente para o sítio, onde veio a falecer em 4 de junho de 1994.
