Description

A U.S. Navy Sikorsky SH-3D Sea King of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 4 (HS-4) "Black Knights" on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63). HS-4 was assigned to Carrier Air Wing 11 (CVW-11) aboard Kitty Hawk for a deployment to the Western Pacific, Vietnam and the Indian Ocean from 23 November 1973 to 9 July 1974.

Kitty Hawk was the trials ship for the "CV-concept" that integrated the VS and HS squadrons of the "Carrier Anti-Submarine Air Groups" into the "Attack Carrier Air Wing"s aboard the large carriers. During this the deployment, Kitty Hawk embarked a whole former CVSG, later only one VS and one HS squadron were integrated into the carrier air wings. On 1 June 1975, all aircraft carriers still in service were re-designated "CV" from "CVA", even the five smaller ones still in service that never operated VS squadrons.
