DescriptionSIG-Sauer M11-A1.jpg |
English: SIG-Sauer M11-A1 with the stickers still on it. It was being sold for a reasonable price, but I was, and am, too poor to afford it. :o(
Oh, well. A little history. The SIG-Sauer P228 (mil-spec designation: M11) was designed to help SIG-Sauer recover from their losses after designing the P226 specifically for the United States Army and losing out in the end to the Beretta 92FS. The P228 was, however, adopted by the Air Force, as they needed a smaller sidearm for pilots. The P228 was also offered as a second sidearm to the US Army for those with smaller hands. Essentially, the P228 was the first "compact" semi-automatic pistol, but I would hesitate to call it a "compact" by today's standards, especially if you consider its weight. The P228 was discontinued after the P229 (a slightly different P228 with a milled, thick stainless steel slide to withstand higher-pressure cartridges like the .357 SIG and .40 S&W) was introduced, essentially replaced by the P229. The stamped-slide process of the P228 was altogether discarded and the P229 slowly evolved away from the round trigger guard of the P228 and became more similar to the P226 in appearance, sadly. When the US Military's P228s began wearing out, they began looking for a replacement. So, naturally, SIG-Sauer created the M11-A1 to hopefully win more contracts in the future, and also to sell to the American market, as the interest in military weapons has grown. The M11-A1 is not a P228. It's really a cosmetically-altered P229, because it has a milled, heavy slide. The trigger is also thin, as opposed to the P228 trigger, which is thick. You may notice that on the M11-A1, the SIG emblem is engraved behind the chamber. Neat little gun with quite a bit of history, and it's good looking also. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up. |
