Description

Anchor Close lies off the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. William Smellie's publishing house produced the first Edinburgh editions of Burns poetry, their friendship extended the boundaries of their working relationship. Burns gives a good description of his friend in his poem:

THE POET'S PROGRESS

"Shrewd Willie Smellie to Crochallan came:

The old cock'd hat, the brown surtout, the same; His grisly beard just bristling in its might,

('Twas four long nights and days to shaving night;)
His uncomb'd hoary locks, wild-staring, thatched
A head for thought profound and clear unmatch'd;
Yet tho' his caustic wit was biting rude,
His heart was warm, benevolent and good."

Robert Burns 1759 - 1796. William Smellie 1740 -1795.
