Das Ortsbild bietet einen einheitlichen gründerzeitlichen Gesamteindruck - am 10. Juli 1895 wurden 729 von 842 Gebäuden des Ortes Brotterode bei einem Großbrand zerstört. Danach wurde Brotterode planmäßig wieder aufgebaut. Es wurde sogar eine Schmalspurbahn (Brotterode–Wernshausen) erbaut und am 11. Mai 1896 für den Material- und Güterverkehr eingesetzt.
