Notes
  • Significance: The Powell County Courthouse, built around 1890, was designed by Frank P. Milborn, one of the South's most prolific nineteenth century architects. It is constructed in a provincial Classical Revival style and displays the Beaux-Art Classical character of his work, which includes the courthouses of Bourbon and Lincoln Counties, Kentucky. The courthouse dominates the Court Square which consists mainly of older residences, many of late Victorian vintage. The building materials of stone, brick, slate and galvanized iron provide the variations in textures that were preferred by the practitioners of this style.
  • Survey number: HABS KY-136
