The SS City of Limerick was bombed and sunk in the Bay of Biscay at 8am on 15 July 1940 despite her neutral markings following the German "requirement" that Ireland cease food deliveries to Britain. Two crew (H Brennan of Dublin and J Sullivan of Liverpool) lost their lives. The survivors took to their lifeboats and were picked up by a Belgian trawler at noon
