editDescriptionSS Nestor (1952) (51022041481).jpg |
The builder’s model of the cargo liner SS Nestor at the Glasgow Transport Museum, 2 March 2007. The Nestor was built by Caledon Shipbuilders, Dundee, being launched and completed in 1952 for the Blue Funnel Line. She measured 465 ft x 64 ft x 31 ft (depth) and weighed 7,802 tons gross. She had 8,250 shp steam turbines and had one screw which gave her a service speed of 16 kts. The Nestor was used on the UK – Far East service. In 1968 she went to Glen Line as the SS Glenafric but returned to the Blue Funnel Line in 1970 who renamed her SS Orestes but in 1971 she was sold several times in quick succession and ended up in 1972 with Adelaide Maitime as SS Aegis Dignity but the following year she was broken up. Her sister ship was the SS Neleus of 1953, which had a similar history to Nestor and was broken up in 1974, The ships typified the Blue Funnel Line's rather refrained, conservative styling which hardly changed over the years. Whilst they looked rather old fashioned for the 1950's, nevertheless their classic lines are very attractive, in my opinion. |
