Description |
The original finding aid described this as: Description: STS-48 Earth observation taken aboard Discovery, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 103, is of ice-covered Kerguelen Island in the South Indian Ocean (near 49 degrees south latitude and 69 degrees east longitude). Topographic features are visible including the central peak, bays and ice along the coast. Scientists studying the imagery pointed out that it is rare for astronauts to see this island, usually not visible because of heavy cloud cover. The image was captured using an electronic still camera (ESC) was stored on a removable hard disk or small optical disk, and was converted to a format suitable for downlink transmission. The ESC documentation was part of Development Test Objective (DTO) 648, Electronic Still Photography.
