Summary edit
DescriptionSacred Heart Church, Raleigh, NC (28221488178).jpg | This is the Sacred Heart Cathedral in downtown Raleigh, NC, as well as several other buildings on the grounds. The Cathedral is the former seat of the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh, and was constructed in 1924 in order to serve as the seat of the Catholic Church in North Carolina. The stone building with its Gothic detailing has a capacity of 320, which made it the smallest Catholic Cathedral in the continental United States (and second-smallest after the Cathedral of the Nativity in Juneau, Alaska) until the designation was passed to the new 2000-seat Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Southwest Raleigh last week (July 26, 2017). The state was the last in the nation to have a Diocese established, as Catholics were small in number and had their populations concentrated in Wilmington and Asheville, at opposite ends of the state. Today, the Sacred Heart Cathedral continues to have the Cathedral School, Cathedral Convent, Cathedral Rectory, and Diocese Offices on its grounds, but these will soon move to a new campus that is slated to be constructed around the new cathedral. Though small, the cathedral is a charming structure, and is very similar to many other downtown churches in charm and style. |
