Description
English: Saga Oseberg moored to the pier at the harbour of Tønsberg, Norway (Tønsberg havn/Tønsberg Brygge/Gjestebrygga/Brygga). The ship is a 2012 built replica (kopi i full skala) of the Oseberg Ship (Osebergskipet), a Viking ship from ca. AD 830 discovered in a large burial mound near Tønsberg,

Photo taken on August 27th, 2019 showing the stempost (forstavn), bow (fore, baug) with carved animal head (utskåret dyrehode), mast, etc. of the ship. In the background to the left is the Kaldnes bro, a bascule footbridge (vippebru/gangbru) crossing the Byfjorden, a part of the Tønsbergfjorden fiord, going from the town center to the Kaldnes Brygge apartements area. Crew members in medieval viking style costumes are seen on the floating dock.

Ship sizes in the Viking Age varied according to use. Trading vessels were broader and higher for cargo, warships longer and lower for speed. The Oseberg ship is a karve, a small type of longship with broad, shallow hull, used for war, ordinary transport and coasting, with oars, sail, a broad steering oar, and bow and stern decorated with woodcarvings.
