Han arbetade på fabrik och började uppdragsfotografera på fritiden. 1922 var han mogen för att etablera sig som professionell fotograf. Första ateljén låg vid G:la Stockholmsg (nuv Gästgivarg) kv Andromeda. 1923 flyttades firman till Torekällg 3 (gårdshus, kv Saturnus). Uppsvinget kom med flytt till centralt läge vid Järnag 6 och etablerandet av "AB Fritz Pettersson Foto Radio Musik (TV)", varifrån museet innehar foton och föremål. Många andra fotografer har arbetat i firman och när FP drog sig tillbaka 1960 fortsatte firman under annan ledning. Merparten av firmans digra produktion skänktes av fotografen till museet 1970.
