English: Headcorn is mentioned in the Domesday Monachorum as Hedekaruna, which means there was a church before 1100. The first Rector is mentioned in 1222, and the oldest part of the church is the north and east wall of the chancel which is 11th C. The nave reached its present length in 14th C. and the south aisle was constructed in the 15th C. The porch has a parvise with a squint into the aisle for the priest who served the chantry in the Lady Chapel, founded 1466. The Font dates from about 1450. It probably stood against a wall as one side is not carved. It features shields angels with a scroll and an Agnus Dei, possibly all painted at one time.
In the south wall of the south aisle is a low table tomb of Bethersden marble set in a decorated arch. This is probably the tomb of Peter Culpeper of Bletchenden as it bears the Culpeper arms. The Tower is late 14th C. with a stair turret. There are 8 bells. The Roof is one of the finest in Kent, the massive rafters came possibly from the Culpeper's Bedgebury estate in the late 14th early 15th C. The church was restored 1854-5 and also 1878. The Vestry contains a bricked in fireplace, maybe an oven for altar bread. There was also possibly a hermit's cell attached via a closed up opening. The organ is from 1922 by Henry Speechly & sons of London. It was originally in the Lady Chapel and moved in 1944. Outside the church, near the south porch, is the remains of an ancient oak tree, perhaps a survivor of the old Wealden Forest of Andred. |
