Description
English: Salt panorama Looking down from the St Monans windmill this series of mounds and stones is evident. These are the remains of salt pan evaporation buildings where salt was once produced from sea-water drawn up from the sea by the windmill. The pans were heated by poor quality locally-mined coal which was brought down on a wagonway ramp. (Much of the better quality coal mined here was exported via Pittemweem Harbour.) Most of the salt was transported in wagons along the coastal path also to Pittenweem harbour.
