Summary
editDescriptionSaltworkers statue (rear view), Victoria Square - geograph.org.uk - 1567191.jpg |
English: Saltworkers statue (rear view), Victoria Square. Cast bronze statue by John McKenna dating from 1998, located near the public library. It commemorates the people who produced salt in Droitwich for many, many centuries. The Domesday Book, from the late 11th century, records annual production as 1,000 tons. By 1772 it had risen to 15,000 tons. Peak production reached 120,000 tons in 1872, but then declined, as the industry started to relocate to Stoke Prior. In 1922 Droitwich's last salt works closed. 1567166. |
