Français : "Le sujet de notre tableau est tire des Métamorphoses d'Ovide,Apollon promet a la Sibylle d'exaucer son voeu si elle accepte de le prendre pour amant. La Sibylle ramasse alors une poignee de sable et demande au Dieu de la musique de vivre autant d'annees qu'elle tient de grains de sable dans ses mains. Par amour, Apollon lui offre ce qu'elle desire. Tel un sablier, les grains de sable passent dans ses paumes de mains, le temps s'ecoule et sa vie defile. La Sibylle oublie de demander de rester jeune, elle finit par souhaiter la mort. Rosa traite le meme sujet dans un tableau (Toile, 171 x 258 cm) conserve a laWallace collection de Londres. Dans un paysage de foret rocheuse, Apollon, est assis, accoude sur sa lyre devant la Sibylle qui lui tend ses mains jointes. Dans une acquaforte Rosa reprend de maniere presque identique la composition de notre tableau (voir L. Salerno, L'opera completa di Salvator Rosa, Milan, 1975, n° 128 et 128a, reproduits). RM" [1]
