Description |
English: Satire on rakish life: a fashionable man with a macaroni queue climbs up on a roof projecting over a shop (with shutters closed) reaching towards a young woman smiling at him from a first-floor window. He stands on the shoulder of a clergyman standing on the pavement with a dishevelled doctor, identified as such by the medicine bottles in his pocket; these two older men are clearly enjoying the escapade. A clock in the background shows that the time is 10.20. ; copy in reverse of "The Adventurous Macaroni" (BM Sat 4618) published by Sayer & Bennett in Fleet Street, 29 August 1774, one of a pair stitched together. c.1774

Notes |
'Macaroni' was the name given to dandified young people in the 1770s. Despite the inclusion of the English firm and address of Carington Bowles in the publication details at the base of the print, the style and execution of the image and verse suggest that it was made in Germany, not exported from England. |

editThis image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. ![]() |
