Description

A number of sandhill cranes are still in the San Luis Valley! Over 100 were seen today. This recent photo was taken by the wetland areas west of the dunes, near San Luis Lakes State Wildlife Area. Cranes roost in wetlands in and near Great Sand Dunes National Park at night, then take off at sunrise to feed in fields during daylight hours. Some sandhill cranes will stay in the valley through November, then continue south to the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico.
