Description

Sandia National Laboratories researcher displays a model of the Big Hill cavern field in Texas, part of the nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve where oil is stored in underground salt caverns.


Sandia has been the geotechnical adviser for the reserve since 1980 and is responsible for characterizing the site, including cavern and well development, geomechanical analysis, the integrity of caverns and wells, subsidence and monitoring.
