Summary edit

Description

Sandstones over shales in the Mississippian of Ohio, USA.

The brownish-colored rocks at the top of this outcrop are part of the sandstone-dominated, lower Logan Formation, a siliciclastic unit in the Lower Mississippian of Ohio. Float samples from the Logan are principally quartzose sandstones. Observed were Zoophycos trace fossils, mud-filled horizontal burrows, mudchip breccia concentrations, a coarser-grained lag with sand, granules, and pebbles, plus molds of crinoid columnals.

The gray-colored rocks making up most of the outcrop are part of the Cuyahoga Formation, also Lower Mississippian. Float samples were principally grayish mudshales. Also present were ironstone concretions (small to medium-sized, with various shapes), fragments from ironstone interbeds (one sample apparently had a small patch of sphalerite, which is ZnS - zinc sulfide), horizontal burrows (a couple were pyrite-filled), and gutter casts. One float piece of ironstone had internal molds of Rhipidomella brachiopods.
