Description

Sandstone from the Mississippian of Ohio, USA. (~4.9 centimeters across at its widest)

The Allensville Member is one of four stratigraphic units in the Mississippian-aged, siliciclastics-dominated Logan Formation of eastern Ohio. Ascending from the base, they are the Berne Conglomerate Member, the Byer Sandstone Member, the Allensville Member, and the Vinton Member. The Allensville Member is a thin, coarse-grained interval that is reported to be conglomeratic. Very few localities still exist. As of 2019, I have seen this unit at three sites. The sample seen here is from an Allensville locality I have not yet visited.

The sample consists of quartzose sandstone having a nearly bimodal grain distribution. The larger, more visible grains are coarse and very coarse sand. The finer-grained material appears to be very fine to fine sand. The coarse-grained sand is angular to subangular to subrounded. The coloration is from iron oxide.

Stratigraphy: float derived from the Allensville Member, Logan Formation, Waverly Group, Osagean Stage, upper Lower Mississippian

Locality: loose talus from summit of Sugar Loaf Hill in the town of Granville, Licking County, east-central Ohio, USA (vicinity of 40° 04’ 02.42” North latitude, 82° 31’ 34.06” West longitude)
