Description

EN:

One of the most beautiful sanctuaries in Mangualde is the chapel of “Nossa Senhora de Cervães”, either because of the construction itself or by the involving churchyard surrounded by huge secular trees. It’s a stone construction from the XII century. Some authors point the year of 1660 us the date of construction. The chapel is dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Cervães and its history is not very clear, and probably it was lost among generations.

However, notes of Dr. Valentim Da Silva (citing Frei Agostinho de Santa Maria) point in this direction:

Between Santiago de Cassurrães and Póvoa de Cervães, exists a little place called Cervas or Cervães. In that valley, a man has been attacked for many Deer’s, so he prayed to the Virgin to save him from a certain death. The Deer’s disappeared and this “miracle” gave origin to the name of "Nossa Senhora de Cervães”. In that place was constructed the primitive chapel, given that it was a very lonely and uninhabited place, the chapel was transferred to the actual place by the year 1660.

Nossa Senhora de Cervães is annually celebrated in the second Sunday of September. On that day the Mass takes place on the churchyard, but before that there is a procession, which begins at the parochial church at Santiago to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Cervães.
The procession is formed not only by the brotherhood, the people and the philharmonic orchestra, but also by tractors very beautifully ornamented, which finality is the transport of the patron saints from the other nine villages, that all together make the parish of Santiago. The procession is closed by Nossa Senhora de Cervães.

The architectural set is complemented by a deactivated fountain and a little chapel called “O Calvário”, both situated behind the Sanctuary, and for a granite stairs in front that gives access to the churchyard.

This is an excellent and quiet place for spent some time with family and friends. Make a journey to Santiago de Cassurrães, near Mangualde, and feel the peace on this Sanctuary, classified as National Monument since 1986. www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC12D5F
