Saraighat -- the first bridge connecting both the banks of mighty Brahmaputra named to commemorate the Battle of Saraighat. Positioned at the narrowest yet a deep and turbulent section where aerial view of the spot will be like that of a bottle-neck.The double decker road cum railway bridge earlier had dual gauge railway tracks in the lower deck. A 40 feet clearance is kept from the normal high flood level to ensure free navigation under the bridge Railway Minister announced the decision to construct the bridge in the Budget session of the Parliament in 1958 and the construction work formally started in January, 1959. It was opened to goods traffic in Oct, 1962 and opened for passenger traffic on 7 June 1963. Though the bridge was put into use in 1962, the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru formally inaugurated the Bridge on June 7, 1963. The estimated cost of the bridge was Rs.10,65,16,891.00 Its length is 1,492 meters. |
