In October, November and part of December, I occasionally volunteer at a Northern Saw-whet Owl banding station in Yellowwood State Forest, between Nashville and Bloomington Indiana. See Project Owlnet for more info. I am not a certified bander but can help recording data and setup/take down nets etc (and proselytize about the program)....and every year, I always try to get a photo or two about the process. I created a set just for my owl photos. I think this year is the fifth or sixth year for this banding station. Last year was an eruption year for Saw-whets, so we expect low numbers this year. So far, between 2 banding stations in the area, there have been 12 birds caught and 25% foreign recapture rate, which is HIGHLY unusual (12 birds does not seem as low as expected) |
