Nach Erkenntnissen von Alfred Höllhuber waren die alten ost-, nord- und westseitigen Mauern des Bergfrieds bereits frühzeitig abgestürzt oder abgetragen worden. Als Ersatz errichtete man dann nur mehr eine 2,55 m dicke Schutzmauer zur Verstärkung der Bergfried-Südmauer. So entstand eine 3,9 m dicke Doppelmauer in der Art einer Schildmauer, die den weiter südlich anschliessenden Palas beschützte. Der ursprüngliche und hochgelegene Eingang in den Bergfried blieb dabei erhalten und verwendet als rundbogige Sitznische oder Ähnlichem. Die Bergfried-Südmauer samt Sitznische stürzte nach 1980 jedoch in sich zusammen. Erhalten und heute noch sichtbar blieb die 2,55 m dicke und noch immer mächtige Schutzmauer (Verstärkungsmauer). Nur niedere Reste und ein Schuttkegel erhielten sich noch von der Bergfried-Südmauer. Die Position des alten Bergfriedeingangs bzw. der Sitznische kann noch in Mauerfugen erkannt werden. |
