Description
English: Scalby Mills and Corrigans Amusements

This photograph of Scalby Mills is looking over Corrigans Amusements (right) and the North Bay Railway terminus (left) toward Long Nab (TA035909), which is the headland beyond.

Corrigans Amusements used to occupy the site now operated by the Scarborough Sea Life and Marine Sanctuary. Before the land was levelled to create the amusements and car park there was a small 'island' here known locally as Monkey Island.

The development that saw the removal of Monkey Island also saw changes to the terminus of the North Bay Railway. Originally the turning loop here was in a tunnel but, as can been seen on the left in this photograph, the tunnel was removed. (Much later when work was carried out on a new sewage scheme the turning loop was removed and replaced with a turntable.) (See this photograph of the turntable by Dr Neil Clifton: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/785338 )
